Introduction
Is your HP Photosmart C309g's printhead clogged, producing streaky output or not printing a certain color, even with new ink cartridges? This guide will teach you how to unclog the printhead inon this printer.
The cleaning steps will work with other printers with permanent in printer printheads that can be removed/replaced as well as integrated to the cartridge heads, but the printhead removal steps and the steps to bypass the printhead initialization are tied to this model and similarly aged 564/920 printers-if you use a HP printer that doesn't use the 564/920 ink cartridges or a different brand printer altogether, read the manual or find a online tutorial to find out how to remove the printhead first. The method for printhead removal should be the same on newer 564 printers, but double check to be sure.
HP no longer makes printers with the 920 print cartridge, but this guide could be useful to people with these printers too that still have them, but do not assume the 564 bypass will work for you, as you may not have such an option as an OfficeJet owner. Also, as I am the author and wrote this back in 2010 and just got around to fixing this guide up '''I do not have plans to get a printer with the HP 920 inks unless it's given to me. If I get one for free, then I will consider it since I do not want to have 5 printers in the corner of my room.''' If you want to write a guide for the 920 printers and beat me to getting one, feel free to use the printhead removal instructions, since I know these printers to be the same, but don't use these pictures since this is a Photosmart printer. The iFixit community will have to find a bypass that works every time, but I will be glad to help if you want :-). If you want to experiment with the HP 564 bypass, it's at your own risk(though I kind of expect it to work.)

You can also try and bypass the initialization of the printhead on non-HP printers and other non 564/920 ink HP printers, but I will not guarantee the outcome for these printers-I only guarantee this method on the c309g and similarly aged printers with 564/920 cartridges-the since I know it to work on printers from this era for sure-HP's "web connected" printers may have protections in place to forceprevent this method out of working, even if bypassed-you can try, but it may not work anymore, especially since HP actually updates the firmware on themthese printers and requires newthe firmware updates to use the web connected extrasapps on the printers. '''TheIf the ink purge bypass used here has to be done EXACTLY as I say towritten, or it will not work!''' Things. I changed everything about this guide since this is originally from 2010 and things have changed a '''lot more then I care to admit with HP printers since I started this''' in 2010these 4 years.
I would also like to mention as the original author this will '''not''' unclog every case of clogged printheads-if this doesn't work and the ink is confirmed good, the printhead is damaged, and you will need to replace the printhead, which is 50.00 online last I checked, which is why this method exists.
'''This guide is being improved. If you see steps without pictures, they are being added for future improvement. There will also be differences in the pictures regarding materials used.'''
