Is your computer getting too hot to handle? Overheating is a sign that your cooling fan may not be working properly, which may cause further damage to your computer. This guide will help you through the replacement of the cooling fan in your Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5084.

Turn over device to view the underside of the laptop, with the battery closest to you.  Unlock the switch on the right side of the battery.

With one hand, unlock and hold the switch on the left of the battery while sliding the battery toward yourself with your other hand to remove it.

  • Unscrew the 5.5 mm "F5" screw using the Phillips #0 screwdriver, and carefully remove the plastic cover.

  • The screw may be captive to the cover, so you may just have to loosen it, and not completely remove it.

  • Remove the 2.5 mm screw labeled "F3" inside the hard drive casing (on the small metal tab of the hard drive) using the Phillips #1 screwdriver.

  • Place your thumb on the large metal tab on the hard drive and slide toward yourself, away from its base attachment.

  • Use your finger to lift the large metal tab on the hard drive to remove completely.

  • Do not lift until the hard drive is completely free from its base attachment, otherwise you may damage the base, and any warranty will be void.

  • Turn laptop over and remove the 2.5mm "F3" screw using a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

  • This step is shown after rotating the device 90 degrees so that the CD drive is closest to you.

  • Wedge a plastic opening tool between the laptop and the CD drive.

  • Gently pull the CD drive out.

  • Carefully remove the CD drive completely by pulling out with your hands.

  • The CD drive should come out easily with little force. If there is any resistance double check if 2.5mm "F3" screw is removed completely.

  • Remove the 5.5 mm "F5" screw with the Phillips #1 screwdriver and lift off plastic cover.

  • Remove two 6.0 mm 'F6' screws with the Phillips #1 screwdriver.

  • Remove all fourteen (14) 6.0 mm 'F6' screws from the back panel using the Phillips #1 screwdriver.

  • Remove the two 6.0 mm golden 'F6' screws shown underneath the battery.

  • Use a prying tool to release all three tabs underneath the battery.

  • Using a Phillips #1 screwdriver, remove two additional 2.0 mm screws underneath where the CD drive was.

  • Then use a Phillips #1 screwdriver and a plastic opening tool to undo the two tabs in this location.

  • Warning: Opening your laptop like this may void the warranty. These steps are difficult to undo, even with specialized tools.

  • The base should be somewhat looser now. Work the slack around the base of the computer until all internal latches have been released.

  • Using a small tool (or small hands) remove the tabs holding the white ribbon in place.

  • Remove the wide black ribbon in the same manner as in the previous step. There are also some catches that must be released.

  • Remove the small white plug by firmly pulling on it.

  • Remove the other white plug in the same manner as shown in the previous picture.

  • Remove the three 2.0 mm screws that are holding the fan in place.

  • Remove the white plug attached to the cooling fan and then remove and clean.

  • Complete the previous steps in reverse order to reassemble and replace the cooling fan.
