You will need to remove the rubber feet and strip at the edge.
-
Keep in mind the edge strip is difficult to work with, as you can see I accidentally ripped mine.
-
You will want to use a spudger or small slotted screwdriver to pull up the strip as you go so you don't do as I did.
-
Once you've removed the strip you'll see a couple screws on either side, that is not all of them, you need to remove the plastic strip that is below the rubber strip as well, you will then find a few additional screws to remove.

You can see here the giant battery front and center as well as the foil covered hdd on the upper left.
-
You may want to remove the battery so as to keep any chance of damaging your computer to a minimum, as you can see it will require removing quite a few screws.
-
The two cables travelling over the hdd will need to be disconnected, to do this you need to lift up the connector as shown.
-
You will notice there are 3 locations the hdd is secured to the laptop. There are 4 screws though, the bottom right corner has a tiny bracket that has two screws holding this corner down.

-
Once you have removed the hdd, you will need to remove the brackets on either side as well as removing the foil from the top of the hdd and transferring them to the new drive.
-
Follow the guide in reverse order to put the laptop back together.
-
Be sure to tighten the screws well as if you don't the laptop will tend to snap in and out at the point where the rubber strip is.
This is an excellent guide. I replaced the spinner with a Sammy 1tb 860 and upgraded to windows 10.
It seems like a modern piece of hardware now!
I would just add one thing, after you get the screws out you need to carefully pry the bottom off. It's got those snaps along the edges that are pretty common. The bottom fits so well that a metal spudger or a thin putty knife is useful to get it started.

The Vaio's original HDD is not enclosed in a case and the foil covers its exposed side. If I'm replacing the HHD with a SSD that is encased, do I still need to use the foil?
I don't know if you need to use the foil, I chose to so I wouldn't lose it or get it damaged in any way since I prefer to keep everything looking good in case I choose to sell it at a later date. I figured it couldn't hurt to put it on the ssd (although likely unnecessary as it was probably to create some sort of barrier for emi from interfering with the HDD which is not a problem with an ssd).

The foil isn't needed when installing an SSD as they produce no heat and it won't redirect heat from the battery away from your drive. I chose not to put the foil back and saw a normal temperature reading but do so at your own discretion.
I lost the screws that hold the screen (second picture)where can i get those ? Or what are the size?
If anyone knows i will really appreciated
Hi,
Im about to do the same with mine Using a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD.
Will I need a 7mm to 9mm adapter to connect the drive to the laptop?
Also is the laptop sata 3 compliant?
Thx mate!
As far as I remember it didn't require any adapters for the swap I used the 840 in mine and it worked like a champ. I do believe it is sata 3 from the specs I looked at previously. Let me know if you've got any other questions and I'll try to answer as best I can!

What is the max Z height of the drive that will fit the bracket? 9.5mm or 7mm? Can't find definitive info, some people same 9.5mm some say 7mm only? Thanks.
