Introduzione
How to swap out the original 500GB drive of this LaCie Rugged dual Firewire/USB2 enclosure from 2012 with a larger 4TB one.
Note that the original drive measures about 9mm in thickness but the new drive is 15mm thick. This enclosure has enough space to accomodate it, with a little modification.
Caveats [Update]:
- only 1.8 TB of the new 4TB drive seems to be usable, but a 2 TB I used later was seen at full capacity.
- The 2TB drive drew too much power via USB and made the HD disconnect frequently. Via Firewire it worked flawlessly. Maybe a powered USB hub could solve that, too.

step 1 is the same as the first 2 steps of this guide for the LaCie Rugged Disassembly (USB model) from which some pictures are taken:
-
remove the orange rubber bumper
-
open the top lid (with the Lacie logo) by slightly lifting the 6 tabs (the 2 middle ones are underneath the warranty warning)
-
there is no need to bend the tabs. Start at one of the corners and lift the tab slightly until it unlocks, while you pull gently. Notice that the center tabs (under the warranty seal) open to the opposite side. Work your way along the first side, then repeat on the other.

-
-
take out the drive, still attached to the SATA connector and wrapped in a stiff transparent plastic jacked that holds the little black rubber bumpers
-
gently unplug the SATA connector
-
-
-
-
if the new drive is thicker than the original one, you need to shorten the little black rubber bumper cubes
-
I needed to cut the lower ones in half (shorten by ~2mm). You can see the leftovers in the last picture.
-
realign the plastic jacket in the enclosure and slide the new drive in (making sure the bumpers don't move)
-
reattach the SATA connector
-
-
-
close the lid
-
even if the new drive takes more space, a little pressure will compress the bumpers and the tabs will lock in place
-
reattach the orange bumper frame
-
My new drive of 4TB gets warm quickly, but for backup that's ok.
-
However, the enclosure's firmware will only see 1.8 TB of the drive.

Thanks for posting this. I just acquired an older version of this drive, which I believe has an ATA hard drive inside. Does anyone know of a source for the LaCie Rugged Triple 160GB internals? It's so old, LaCie doesn't seem to even acknowledge it any more.
Update: Found documentation on LaCie's legacy support site. I'd still love to see a teardown of this older drive before I need to replace the mechanism.
