How much weight can I save by removing the optical drive?

    gunes314 - Replica

You can save a lot of weight if lets say your installing a solid state drive or putting in a second hard drive but if you know that you use the CD/DVD disc drive a lot then you might just want to leave the drive alone.

    Marshall WahlstromHelgren -

Tip: Use one of those weekday pill holders to have a cheep way to store screws you remove and each day of the week can be for different sizes or parts. It has been handy to have (much less expensive than the magnetic mat.

Hello, where can I buy the screws I need in case I lose one of them?

    taylornya - Replica

I have one stripped screw... How opening without drill it?! Any suggestions please?

    rodrigosady - Replica

I also stripped a couple screws. I wasn’t able to open it up without drilling. After drilling the heads and removing the cover it was easy to hacksaw the tip and unscrew with a standard driver.

    Michael Wilkens -

My top tip - make sure you buy good quality Phillips screwdrivers and a magnetic holder. Cheap screwdrivers won’t get the screws undone safely. Without a magnetic holder you have no chance of getting the tiny crews in and out safely.

    jeremyyoung - Replica

A good Phillips 00 is your friend here. Also, when reinserting the screws, gently start anticlockwise and you wil feel a click at the start of the thread. This tells you you’re in the right place and less likely to cross-thread through force in the wrong place.

Is this step of removing the battery connector required?

    manodh - Replica

yes - as with disassembly of any electronic component you have to remove any power source. You don't want to accidentally turn the Mac on

    khull -

Prying the battery connector off does not take much force. I did exactly what the guide suggested (walked it off back and forth) with the spudger without any problems. Just be very gentle, much like with anything inside laptops, they are very fragile and need to be worked with carefully. A+ instructions, battery replacement was a success.

Be patient on disconnecting this one. It worked for me step by step, little by little.

One other note: The screw heads fit flush with the curvature of the case -- which means that they aren't exactly horizontal. In other words, they aren't perpendicular to the table that the computer is resting on. Don't try to force them straight in vertically, because you'll risk cross-threading them. (nearly ruined one screw hole myself!)

    1. Do not press again the locker.

    2. Changed the bottom RAM first.

    4. Close everything.

    5. Switch the Mac and check "Finder>About my Mac" show the correct RAM.

Thank you, Phillip! My mid-2012 2.5 i5 works perfectly with 16 Gb of 1600Mhz DDR3.

Just replaced my 4GB with 16GB of PNY from Best Buy. AWESOME difference in performance!!

Michael Chandler -

Could you please specify the memory chip that you bought? I need more details in order to get the right one, thanks!

Lin -

Any memory kit that is either validated by Apple or that has the proper channel configuration (9-9-9-24) is okay to use. If you are looking for pure performance RAM, a kit of Corsair Vengeance RAM is okay to use (again, check the channel configuration), but most people will benefit from a kit of Corsair Mac Memory or the kit that iFixit provides in the volume of your choice.

Seji the veggie -

Please note that the Apple says that this MacBook pro is using 1600MHz DDR3 memory. Instructons suggestinf an old memory for some reason.

7 December 2015: Successfully used this guide on my new BTO Mid 2012 i7 13" - really nice to have this tutorial up on my iMac while I did this - nice to "check off" the steps.

I remembered from somewhere that one at least used to have to reset the PRAM/SMC, but, it recognized the new RAM amount of 16 glorious GB with no problem.

I think disconnecting the battery had the same effect, as the Date reverted not quite to 1969 - that also updated with no problem.

Thanks!

Hello!

There is a photo of inside of lower case?

i buy second-hand mbp mid 2012 13" with 16 Gb RAM, and HWMonitor shows memory module 1 temp around 75 - 77 celsium, who is a bit too high, i think.

open lower case, clean off dust, and see on a lower case inside, in place, where is memory modules, is additional insulation foam layer. dont know - that is from apple, or previous owner put that on its own?

in any case 77 celsium on memory is too high temp, i think. have also 2011 late mbp 13" also with 16 Gb ram, and there typical temp on mem module 1 shows about 52 -55 celsium - almost as half lower than on mid 2012....

My mid-2012 13” says it has 4GB RAM and I want to upgrade to 8GB. Do I need to get 2 X 4GB or just 1 X 8GB? If I get just 1 X 8GB can I leave the old RAM in the 2nd slot?

You can add a 8GB along with your existing 4GB, taking the total to 12GB. You can also add just one 4GB, taking the total to 8GB.

Well, it’s 2019 and I just did this to my old 2012. It was quite easy. Reading comments I realized the main concern regarding disconnecting the battery is to avoid frying the motherboard by accidentally touching areas with something conductive and I agree.

The first re-boot showed only one bay in use and I had to check and found out I didn’t push the top memory card hard enough but once I fix this hiccup and re-booted again I saw the new 16gb and my loving MacBook Pro comes to life so fast!

Mario - Replica

I have bought 2x4GB Ram, a kit of 8GB for my mac. I see that someone here is replacing with 16GB, how is that when I’ve read there is a maximum of 8 to be used on this machine?

In 2015 I replaced RAM with 2 X 8 GBKIT DUAL CHANNEL SO-DIMM DDR3 PC12800 (CT2C8G3S160BMCEU).

Works fine, but since, each time my MBP goes in “standby” mode (when unpluged or closed) this one doesn’t not awake, need to turn it off (by holding off button for a few seconds) and restart it !

I also test my RAM (memtest, plus alternativly test one by one 8GB + hibernate / standby-> awaking is OK)

Since i also upgrade HDD with a SSD and problem is not solved. I tried several things I found from some people who encountered the same issue, but my “standby mode" problem is still there in 2019. (In fact it seems I was not able to change the hibernate image size, this one is always 8GB).

My MBP is running under macOS Mojave (10.14), I also encountered with other versions of macOS from the first that was installed (Yosemite)

Does some one here found a solution ?

hallo, I replaced my 4GB with 16GB but the difference in performance was not significant. I see the macbook recognize only 10GB (8+2). So either are recognized but only one is used in full. Could you suggest me how to have 16GB recognized and used? thank you

I just upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 16, and I don’t even recognize this computer. The difference in performance is so off the charts it’s like having a new computer. I’d intentionally gone for an older model because there certain components I needed to work remotely, and had been really regretting my decision. Now the only thing I’m upset about is how long I waited. Thank you for the clear and detailed guide on how to do this.

I’m confused by looking at all the RAM available on Amazon India. Some are DD3, some are DDR3 L. Other mention UNBUFFERED.

All i want to know is which is compatible with my MACBOOK PRO 13” Intel i5 Mid 2012 model and how much max it can support 8 GB or 16 GB?

Will there be a drastic difference in speed and performance between 8 and 16 GB upgrade or not much, as Graphic card is the same. I want to use it for video editing and rendering mostly not 3D rendering.

* I checked on Apple website and i think it said 8 GB is max fro my Core i5 model and so i think 16 GB is for Core i7 model.

Please help!

Thanks

I have the core i5 model, and have upgraded to 16GB since 2013, and it has been nice ever since. Take a look at this, https://www.crucial.in/compatible-upgrad...) which tells exactly what will fit in your mac. Unbuffered is fine, and most entries in Amazon India will do just fine. eg. https://www.amazon.in/dp/B00EHJ5U0K and https://www.amazon.in/dp/B00KEAEX54

Has anyone had one of their ram slots go bad? It would randomly crash, a process of elimination determined which slot is bad.

That happened to me, I only have one slot filled with a 4gb stick. It works fine for me, occasionally it rams out as I call it.

The laptop actually supports upto 16GB, however Apple sold it with a max of 8GB, and that's what they supported. I myself have it upgraded to 16GB since 2013, and it works fine. Crucial’s site documents it too https://www.crucial.in/compatible-upgrad...)

galuano1 -

Well, thanks for the advice @galuano1 it seems like bad timing to have read this 3 days after my 2x4GB RAM upgrade arrived! But for now my MBP goes just fine with 8GB. But now I have the 16GB upgrade in mind!

Wytchkraft -

2021 Jan. 30: I just installed 2 x 8GB RAM (16GB total) in my 13” mid-2012 MacBook Pro (“MBP”), to replace the 2 x 2GB RAM that came in it. An apple tech (“Advisor”) told me that his tech notes at Apple say that my MBP does support 16GB RAM, and after a few minutes of testing with the new RAM, the MBP works significantly faster (from a little bit, to lots, depending on the app or function) :-)

I bought the 2 new 8GB RAM modules/”sticks” that I installed from Best Buy, and they are PNY brand, model #MN8GSD31600LV (DDR3, 1600MHz, 1.35V, CAS 11), at $40 each ($80 + tax, total).

Dear Madam, dear Sir, I followed the apple tutorial to change the ram of my early2011 Macbookpro.Unlike in iFixit tuto, it is not specified to disconnect the battery prior RAM removal/installation. Now the machine does not start, even if I replace the old ram.

Mac does not react anymore, magsafe is not even recognised

I already tried the SMC reset using shift+ctrl+option + power 10s , unfortunately it did not work.

Is there any trick?

I had to proceed to dust removal, do you believe I generated some shortcuts somewhere or the fact that I removed the ram without disconnecting battery is the main issue?

Pierre Panine - Replica

I solved the issue: Opened again the mac. Disconnected the battery. connected the magsafe charger. restart mac. close the mac without stop it. wait the fan stop. reconnect the battery. Connect the magsafe, now it works back as before
