How to Replace a Pony 42 Troy-Bilt Riding Lawnmower Fuel Filter

Introduzione

Suppose your Pony 42 Troy-Bilt riding lawnmower shows signs of decreased performance or difficulty starting the mower. Determining whether or not a fuel filter is bad requires removing and examining the filter. Storing lawnmowers for long periods of time may degrade the fuel to the point of clogging the fuel filter and making the lawnmower inoperable.

    • Slide the metal clip located on the right side closest to the filter, using your pliers, and slide the clip down the fuel line.

    • Using your pliers, slide the metal clip located on the left side closest to the filter down the fuel line.

    • Use a shop towel or rag to wipe the fuel line to check for leaks.

    • Firmly grasp the fuel line with your right hand, and hold the fuel filter steady with your left hand.

    • With a pulling and twisting motion, remove the fuel line from the fuel filter.

    • Use your shop towel or rag to absorb any fuel left in the fuel line from spilling.

    • If you have fuel in your fuel tank, then simply hold the fuel line upward to prevent unintentionally draining the fuel tank.

    • With an approved fuel container, place the end of the fuel line into your container to drain bad fuel.

    • With a pulling and twisting motion, remove the fuel filter from the fuel line leading into your fuel pump.

    • Some fuel may still be in the line leading to the fuel pump. Use your shop towel or rag to soak residual fuel.

    • Keep the filter a safe distance from your face and look through one end.

    • You should be able to see light shining through clearly from the other side. If debris is clogging the mesh screen, pleated paper or the inside of the casing, replace the old filter with a new replacement fuel filter.

The larger diameter side of the filter is supposed to go to the engine side - you have it backwards.

In-line fuel filters, in most cases, do have flow directions and it is always best to follow installation instructions for specific parts. The fuel filter in this tutorial is a Briggs and Stratton 75 micron filter that uses a mesh and may be installed in either direction.
