Introduzione
A cheater cord (also called a test cord, tester cord, or component tester) lets you power and test an appliance part away from the appliance, such as a washer drain pump or a refrigerator heater element. This guide shows how to add spade terminals to a lamp cord with an on/off switch, how to connect it to common components, and how to use a kilowatt meter to measure power draw.
Cosa ti serve
-
Passo 1 Prepare a safe testing area
-
Work on a dry, non-conductive surface with the appliance part secured so it can’t roll, spin, or move when powered.
-
-
Passo 2 Gather materials and tools
-
Get a basic two-prong lamp cord with an inline on/off switch.
-
Get 14 AWG female spade terminals that match the tabs on the parts you plan to test.
-
Get a kilowatt meter if you want to measure watts, volts, and amps while testing.
-
Use a wire stripper or cutter as needed for your cord and terminals.
-
-
Passo 3 Prepare the cord wires
-
Open the cord end you’ll be adding connectors to, so the two conductors are accessible.
-
Strip enough insulation from each conductor to fit fully into the spade terminal barrel you’re using.
-
Twist the exposed wire strands on each conductor so they’re tight and secure.
-
-
Passo 4 Crimp the female spade terminals
-
Slide a 14 AWG female spade terminal onto a prepared wire end until the copper is fully inside the barrel.
-
Use the blue crimp position on the crimping tool for these 14 AWG terminals.
-
Crimp the terminal firmly, then pull on the wire to confirm it won’t slip out.
-
Repeat the strip, twist, and crimp process for the second conductor.
-
-
Passo 5 Set up the kilowatt meter and switch
-
Plug the kilowatt meter into the wall outlet.
-
Plug the cheater cord into the kilowatt meter, and set the cord’s switch to Off.
-
Use the meter to view watts and other readings while the part is running.
-
-
Passo 6 Test a washer drain pump
-
Attach the two female spade terminals to the drain pump’s two terminals.
-
Identify which pump wire is live and which is neutral before powering the pump.
-
Turn the cord’s switch On to run the pump and read the wattage on the kilowatt meter.
-
-
Passo 7 Test a heater element with piggyback connectors
-
Connect the cheater cord’s spade terminals to the heater wiring using the existing piggyback connectors so the terminals can be swapped quickly.
-
Turn the cord’s switch On and watch the kilowatt meter to see the heater’s power draw.
-
-
Passo 8 Shut down and plan connector options
-
Switch the cord Off and confirm the meter drops to zero watts before handling any connections.
-
Unplug the cord from the meter, then unplug the meter from the wall outlet.
-
Inspect each crimp for a tight fit, since poor-quality crimp terminals can fail and cause unreliable tests.
-
Use the cheater cord and kilowatt meter to verify that a component runs, heats, or draws power in a way that matches expectations. Keep tests short, keep terminals covered and away from contact, and unplug the cord before touching or swapping any spade connections. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
