Introduzione
Fitness for Use is the best definition of both a quality product and also an effective repair I've found. This generic guide is a set of simple steps and considerations I've learned over the past 50 years repairing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, software, end user, and human repairs. Guess what; if any of them aren't fit for use, the considerations are very similar to get them back into ship shape.

Talk - a lot - to whoever saw the symptoms. Ask about what they noticed. Ask them to show you the problem. Find out who has already worked on the problem because they may have introduced a 2nd and 3rd problem to fix. Be Sherlock Holmes listening for clues and inconsistencies. Time or temperature,

Assume the name labeling the problem is incorrect. A problem labeled with the wrong name can force you to devote energy to solving a problem that doesn't exist; your original problem will patiently wait to reappear when you're done fixing nothing. Assume that the initial name of the problem given to you (or created by you!!) is misleading.

Use your senses. Clean up dirt and dust then use a flashlight to look carefully for anything amiss. Tug and push wires to ensure they are tight. Shake mechanical parts for loose fit. Sniff to see if anything smells odd. Place a wooden rod or short pipe on your ear to locate noise sources. Test to see if you accidentally fixed the problem

Divide and isolate. Remove parts, connections, or code to test smaller systems and isolate the problem. Isolate and then bypass potential problem areas to prove what does work. Bypass with jumper wires, wrenches. Use a jumper cable to bypass a battery cable, wire to direct power to a suspected component. Avoid electrical if unsure.

Force pesky intermittent problems. Be creative forcing an intermittent problem to appear; and to fully test a fix. Add loads, allow to cool or to warm up. Add heat. Move into sunlight, place in the dark, press/pull/twist on components, covers, chassis while running, Duplicate time of day. Intermittent problems are the tricky ones.
