Bathtub Drain Stopper Replacement

Overtime, bathtub drains become worn and need to be replaced. Some indications that you need a new drain are slow drainage, leaks, corrosion or cracks, a broken stopper, or mineral buildup that cannot be cleaned. This guide provides an easy, safe, and affordable way to replace a bathtub drain on your own.

Standard bathtub drains have a 1.5 inch diameter. If you are unsure about the size of yours, measure before purchasing the new drain cover.

You can find a new drain cover at your local Home Depot; I purchased the Danco EZ Drain Cover. This package includes the EZ Drain Cover and two gaskets.

Remove the old stopper from the drain.

The gaskets come in two sizes, large and small. To determine which is the correct size, position the gasket into the groove of the stopper. The flange side should be in an upright position.
Insert the stopper with the gasket in the drain.
You may have to try both gaskets to ensure the best fit. If it is too loose, water may leak through.

You may additionally use plumber's putty to seal the stopper if the gasket does not fit securely. To use the plumber's putty, apply it around the under side of the stopper rim. After it is applied, insert the stopper into the drain and press into place.

Test the stopper by closing the drain and filling the tub with water. Press down on top of the stopper to close the drain.
To open the drain and release the water, press down on top of the stopper again.
