Power off and unplug your laptop before you begin.
  • Power off and unplug your laptop before you begin.

  • Turn the laptop upside-down and remove the following screws using a Phillips #0 driver:

    • Two 9.5 mm screws in the middle of the back edge, and one 9.5 mm screw in the right edge

    • Two 4.3 mm screws in the back corners

    • One 17.5 mm screw at the left edge near the optical drive

    • Three 4.3 mm screws in the front edge

screw assignments are definitely wrong. I swapped the red and the green, as per comment above, and kept the blue as-is.

Thanks everyone. It does seem like someone got their screws mixed up when they wrote this guide. I’ve made some changes as you all suggested, so the screw placements should be more accurate now. If anyone with this laptop could verify the screw measurements with a digital caliper, that’d also be very helpful.

Use the plastic opening tool to separate the keyboard plate cover from the bottom cover. In order to do this, insert the plastic opening tool in between the keyboard plate cover and the bottom cover, then slide along edges to pry open.

  • Locate the three ribbons connecting the keyboard plate cover to the bottom cover.

Aggiungi Commento

  • Invert the laptop in order to gain access to the ribbons.

  • Remove each ribbon by flipping the small white plastic flap up and gently pulling on the ribbon.

Don't remove the ribbons, just move the keyboard slightly forward to remove the old battery and insert the new one (just make sure they are all connected when you put it back)

  • Now that the ribbons have been detached from the bottom cover, carefully remove the keyboard plate cover. Once it has been removed, place it in a safe and moisture free area so it does not get damaged.

Is painting your nails crucial for step 5?

wiedzmin - Replica

Yes and you have to put lotion on

joemidjette - Replica

Now, that is a stupid question! Of course! As I am working on 551M, I naturally have to have nails painted orange, with blue accents!

  • Unscrew the three 5.5 mm Phillips #0 screws with the Phillips #0 Screwdriver.

Aggiungi Commento

  • Once the screws have been removed, place your fingers on the left corners and push the hard drive towards the right edge of the laptop (relative to the picture).

Aggiungi Commento

  • Once it is free, remove the hard drive from its internal cavity.

Aggiungi Commento

  • Using the Phillips #0 Screwdriver, unscrew the 5.5 mm Phillips #0 screw that holds the spacer in place.

this spacer may be a cd rom drive or potentially a second storage device like an ssd or hard drive. Either way the process is the same, remove the single screw, and slide to the right.

Josh - Replica

  • Remove the spacer from the laptop by gently sliding it towards the right edge of the laptop.

Aggiungi Commento

  • Use the Phillips #0 Screwdriver to unscrew the 3.2 mm Phillips #0 screw which attaches the WiFi card to the motherboard.

Aggiungi Commento

  • Disconnect the Wifi card from the motherboard by gently sliding it towards the right edge of the laptop.

Aggiungi Commento

  • Remove each of the two small antenna connections by disconnecting one wire at a time. Each wire should easily unsnap from the Wifi card.

mine only had the black cable and the small wifi card was slightly different. the card itself has two available connections and is labeled as to where the black cable (main) and white cable if it were present (aux) cables connect.

Josh - Replica

  • Remove the battery from the laptop by applying pressure on both ends and lifting it out of the case.

Aggiungi Commento

  • With the Phillips #0 Screwdriver, remove the nine 5.5 mm Phillips #0 screws which hold the motherboard in place.

there is one more screw that must be removed at the bottom right corner of the motherboard, just out of view.

Josh - Replica

  • Now, locate the two wires connected to the motherboard.

Aggiungi Commento

  • Remove the wires by easily pulling them parallel to the motherboard's surface.

  • The wires are very fragile. Be sure to pull carefully so that they do not break!

Aggiungi Commento

  • Remove the LCD display connection by gently pulling on the attached wire.

    • Gently lift any tape that may be holding the connection.

If the tape is removed when disconnecting, be SUPER sure that the connector is the right way before reconnecting. I managed to brake this connector by putting it in the wrong way! Both sides look very similar.

Ben Garrod - Replica

  • Remove the motherboard from the case by gently lifting it upward.

anyone know what the part number is for the audio combo jack?

Jeff McVay - Replica

My mobo has some damaged mosfets due to a faulty charger. I tested both voltage and amperage with a multimeter and theres a part of the mobo that’s not receiving any power, I figured out searching on the web that there are a few mosfets that regulate voltage on the mobo and there is one that’s not giving any output power at all. The mobo turns on for a few seconds starts the BIOS configuration then turs off and doesn’t start at all for about 4 hours or so. if I connect the DC adapter the charging led turns on for a few seconds then turns off again once every few hours. My laptop is out of any warranty and I really wat to fix this, I can’t afford a new laptop or a replacement mobo

Ismael Leblanc - Replica

now many sellers on ebay have cheap motherboards for asus x551ca, it’s more expensive to fix a motherboard than to buy a replacement.
