Tre anni dopo il lancio della prima Playstation 4 a novembre 2013, Sony rilasciò PS4 Pro: per la prima volta l'azienda rilascia un significativo  aggiornamento hardware mid-gen per le proprie consolle.

L'aggiornamento del sistema offre più del doppio delle prestazioni grafiche rispetto a PS4. Ad ogni modo Sony ha deciso che tutti i giochi siano compatibili con entrambe le versioni di PS4. La versione Pro è  in grado di fornire un miglioramento della risoluzione per i giochi esistenti e futuri e supporta lo streaming video in 4K. Sebbene sia capace di leggere dischi standard Blu-Ray, la Pro non supporta i Blu-Ray 4K / UHD.

Con i suoi 3,3 kg e 295 x 327 x 55 mm, la Pro è sia più grande sia più pesante della verione originale di PS4. Una delle caratteristiche distintive che ha la Pro è quella di essere composta da 3 strati invece di 2. Ha anche una porta USB aggiuntiva.
