Should I replace the dock connector because of water damage?

To date my iPhone 4 has taken 2 dips in water (one toilet bowl and one cup of water). The first swim was easily fixed by using the old rice trick. The last dip had more lasting effects.

After using rice, the phone became fully functional, except for the fact that the battery drained at an alarming rate. One night I fell asleep without connecting to a charger, and this seemed to be the final blow.

The phone does not turn on at all when standing alone. When it's plugged into a wall charger, I get a message saying that the phone needs to be connected to iTunes. When I connect to my computer, the phone does nothing but flash a silver apple on and off and iTunes/iPhoto does not recognize that the device is connected.

After reading about water damage, I gave changing the battery a try but to no avail. The symptoms are still the same. I refuse to believe it is dead since it worked for weeks after its last swim. Does anyone think changing the dock connector might do the trick? (the phone sat in an inch of water for a few minutes, dock side submerged, which is why I'm wondering about this possible fix...)

Hey Michele, sorry to hear about your iPhone woes; it happens to the best of us (I had a similar issue involving an entire can of soda and a MacBook Pro).

I'm not sure if you checked out our extremely useful iPhone Liquid Damage guide. If you have followed all of those steps and replacing the battery does nothing, it is highly likely that the liquid caused a short on the logic board.

The key with liquid damage is preventing shorts. I could drop an iPhone in a pool, leave it there for hours, take it out, clean it off, and have no problems as long as there was no power going to the logic board. On the other hand, I could spill one drop on it, and if it gets to the logic board, it could cause a short and ruin the logic board.

Replacing the dock connector is an option, but if it is a fried logic board, it won't help.

If nothing seems to fix your phone, try going to your local Apple store and see if they can do anything for you (for free). In my MacBook Pro story, they did a 1200 dollar repair for free, even though it was not covered under warranty.

Hope this helps at all. Good luck with your phone, let us know how it goes!

Thank you so much for your response. You taught me something new and I have to admit it is possible there was a short. It makes sense to check with Apple first, though I was avoiding them for fear of how much money they'll want from me. But hey - maybe I'll luck out! I've been away all weekend, but off to Apple I go tomorrow. Thanks again!

I'm glad I could help, Michelle. It never hurts to go in and ask for a free repair—the worst that could happen is they say no. :)

You have to put the logicboard and dock connector to remove corrosion! You may have did a number not using IPA, but don't loose hope yet

Replace the battery and put the boards in IPA(not the battery and screen assembly, get a q-tip and did that in IPA to clean connectors

Change the battery, it might have a short

As stated, I changed the battery. When I did, I cleaned all metal connectors with windex using a Q-tip. But thank you for your response.

index usualy dosen't do damge, but it is conductive and may cause more, IPA isn't
